Impulsive Christmas Shopping

Monday, November 28, 2011

Impulsive Christmas shopping is a problem which plagues many during the holiday season and it can have a variety of complications. Some of the problems which often stem from impulsive Christmas shopping are going over budget, buying frivolous items and even forgetting about items that were already purchased. All of these problems can pose their own set of dilemmas and this article will discuss the ramifications of impulsive Christmas shopping. However, it is important to remember that although there are many problems associated with impulsive Christmas shopping there is also some merit to this shopping tactic.
Going over budget is one of the major concerns of impulsive Christmas shopping. A common scenario is to pick up a few small items each time you go out Christmas shopping. These gifts may seem small and seemingly harmless to your budget but they can add up over time. For example you may only be purchasing items which cost less than $10 but if you buy enough of these items, you could find yourself hundreds of dollars over budget without even realizing it. One way to combat this problem is to write down each item and the price of every gift you buy. This will help you to be aware of how these small gifts can add up and may prevent you from shopping on impulse in the future.

Purchasing frivolous gifts is another problem associated with impulsive Christmas shopping. You may see a few small items which you think will make cute gifts at the time but after you purchase these items you might realize they are actually quite silly. When this occurs you have two choices you can either return the item or replace it for a more meaningful gift or you could keep the item and give it to your friend or relative anyway. If you opt to return the item you may find yourself pressed for time to find a replacement gift depending on when you started shopping. If it is close to Christmas already, you may have difficulty finding some thing at the last minute and may have no choice but to give your friend or relative the gift you purchased on an impulse.
Another problem often associated with impulsive Christmas shopping is forgetting about items you have already purchased. If you purchase a number of small items on impulse you may put these gifts in a safe location and then completely forget about them. When this happens you may end up buying additional gifts for those on your guest list who were supposed to receive the impulse gifts you already purchased. This can cause you to go over budget and also create unnecessary stress.

While there are many problems which are often associated with impulsive Christmas shopping, it is important to remember that sometimes impulsive Christmas shopping is a good idea. When you see an item that you just know will make the perfect Christmas gift for a friend or relative and purchase the item without giving it any thought that is the exact definition of impulsive shopping. However, it is also not necessarily a bad thing. Buying a gift on impulse is not a problem when the gift you purchase is a great gift for the intended recipient but impulse Christmas shopping becomes problematic when it causes the shopper to go over budget or purchase silly items they wouldn’t normally buy.

Decorating Your Workplace for Christmas

Wednesday, November 23, 2011

When it comes to Christmas decorations, there are many who only decorate their homes, but there are others who wish to do more.  If you are one of those individuals, there is a good chance that you may be interested in decorating your workplace for Christmas.  If you are interested in decorating your workplace or even just your workspace, you will find that there are a number of different ways that you can go about doing so; ways that can help you find affordable Christmas decorations or the ones that look the best.
Before you can begin to familiarize yourself with easy and low-cost ways to decorate your workplace for Christmas, you may want to keep a number of important things in mind. One of those things is the fact that not everyone celebrates Christmas as a holiday.  There are some individuals who choose not to celebrate Christmas on their own, but there are others who are following the views and beliefs of their religion.  Since there is a good chance that you may be working with someone who does not celebrate Christmas, you may want to ask your supervisors or your other employees before you begin decorating, even if you are only decorating your own personal workspace.

Once you have determined that it is okay for you to decorate your workplace for Christmas, you may want to start searching for Christmas decorations.  As nice as it is to decorate your office, not everyone treats it the same as their home.  That is why there is a good chance that you may be looking for low-cost Christmas decorations.  If you are looking for low-cost Christmas decorations, you are advised to examine your local dollars stores. Depending on the dollar store in question, you should be able to find a fairly large selection of low-cost Christmas decorations.  These low-cost Christmas decorations may include small strands of Christmas lights, Christmas pictures, Christmas signs, as well as small Christmas cardboard cutouts.  Many of these low-cost items would look great in your office space.
Although there is a good chance that you may be shopping for Christmas decorations on a budget, there is also a chance that cost may not be a concern of yours.  If you are looking to have the best decorated workspace in your building, you may be shopping for beautiful, elegant, or trendy Christmas decorations. If that is the case, you may want to think about shopping at a local specialty Christmas shop or online.  These shopping methods will likely give you the biggest selection of Christmas decorations to choose from.  They may cost a little bit more, but they are almost always worth the price. Whether you are looking for porcelain or ceramic Christmas figurines, tabletop fiber optic Christmas decorations, or small Christmas trees that you could decorate, you should be able to find what you are looking for online or at a specialty Christmas shop.

As mentioned above, it was advised that you speak to your coworkers and supervisors before you decorate for Christmas.  Even if you know of someone in your workplace who does not celebrate Christmas you can still decorate your workspace for Christmas; however, you will need to take a little bit different of an approach.  Instead of decorating your workspace or workplace with Christmas decorations that symbolize Christmas, such as decorations that have Christmas trees, Santa, or reindeers on them, you could take a more simple approach.  Simply by purchasing a red and green tablecloth for your desk or an artificial bouquet of red and green flowers, you could still bring the holiday spirit into your workplace, without having to worry about offending one of your coworkers.
By keeping the above mentioned points in mind, you should easily be able to decorate your workplace or workspace for Christmas, no matter what you had in mind.  Christmas season is all about sharing, giving, and spreading the holiday joy, so, if you want, start spreading that joy to your coworkers today!

Family Holidays: Tips for Peace and Harmony

Tuesday, November 22, 2011

What do you like to do on family holidays?  Go to the beach or spend a week in the country?  Maybe you like camping or visiting relatives.  Whatever you enjoy, family holidays are a chance for everyone in the family to get reacquainted and spend quality time together.  It's a chance for parents to really talk with their teens and find out what's going on in their lives.  It's important to keep the communication lines open, and a family holiday is a good time to do that.  Having a good relationship with their parents is one of the most important factors in keeping teens out of trouble.
Studies have shown that when families take holidays together, they are more likely to eat together and are less likely to argue.  They do not watch as much television because they are involved in doing things together.  Kids even report that their parents seem to act differently while on holiday.

While family holidays are a good time to connect with your kids, communication problems that are already there will not automatically disappear.  Especially with teenagers it is important to listen and be flexible.  Find out what the kids would like to do and eat and plan accordingly.  While even teenagers need boundaries, it is important for parents to try to avoid needless confrontation.  Explain why you make the decisions you do and show them positive attention.
Kids will appreciate being included in travel plans.  There's a good chance they will choose a theme park or the beach if those are among the options.  Sometimes it works well for a teenager to take a special friend along on family holidays.  While this might increase the parents' load, the teen is likely to really appreciate it.  Also, sometimes it works well for kids to go on holidays with their grandparents instead of their parents.  Sometimes there is a special relationship here that can help kids open up and communicate about their concerns.

While on family holidays, if teens are uncooperative or behave improperly, try to deal with the problem in private.  Teens are very aware of embarrassmant and it is needlessly mean to exploit this sensitivity.  In fact, you might explain to the kids how their behavior embarrasses you, and they in turn might work harder at getting along and acting appropriately.
Kids will be happier on family vacations if they have snacks, drinks, and entertainment.  Few kids enjoy a long ride in the car!  Try to provide individual CD players or hand-held video games, and don't forget to take plenty of bathroom stops.  Sometimes kids enjoy the ride more if they can help you follow the map.  This is an educational activity for them as well.  By following these suggestions, your family holidays can make a happy memory.

When it comes to deciding on party entertainment for your Thanksgiving party, it is important to keep the type of party that you are hosting in mind.  For instance, are you having a formal Thanksgiving party or a causal Thanksgiving party?  Also, what does your guest list look like?  Are you having a Thanksgiving party for kids, one for adults, or a party where everyone is invited?  The type party that you will be having is extremely important, when it comes to choosing entertainment for the event.

Regardless of what type of Thanksgiving party you are having, you may enjoy having music played.  The type of Thanksgiving party you have; however, will have an impact on the type of music that you choose.  If you are having a formal Thanksgiving party, classical music may do.  For a causal Thanksgiving party, music that your guests can get up and dancing to may be the perfect form of entertainment.  Although it is your choice if you would like to have music at your Thanksgiving party, as well as what type of music, it may be a good idea to tailor your selection to your Thanksgiving party.
Party games are another popular form of entertainment that may be ideal for your Thanksgiving party.  If you are hosting a kid only Thanksgiving party, it is almost guaranteed that games will be a hit.  For adult parties, adult themed games are also popular.  However, as you may likely already know, party games, particularly those that are causal in nature, may not fit in with a formal Thanksgiving party.  That does not mean that you cannot incorporate party games into a formal Thanksgiving party, it just means that you want to find games that will fit in with your party theme.  You can easily find a wide array of Thanksgiving party game ideas online, often with a standard internet search.

While you might not necessarily consider eating a form of entertainment, it could easily be considered one.  If you are planning a casual Thanksgiving party, it may be ideal to have a wide array of snacks on hand, particularly if children will be present at your party.  For a formal Thanksgiving party, a full fledge Thanksgiving dinner may be the perfect choice.  It is also advised that you try and tailor your selection of food and snacks to your party style. For instance, if you are hosting a formal Thanksgiving party, it may be a good idea to have elegant dishes prepared for the dinner and for the snacks.
As you can easily see, there are a number of different forms of entertainment that you can offer at your next Thanksgiving party.  Regardless of which type of party you plan on hosting, you can easily take steps to ensure that your party guests have a fun, exciting, and memorable time.

Low-Cost Christmas Decorations

Saturday, November 19, 2011

Are you planning on decorating your home for Christmas this year?  If so, have you completed the first step?  When it comes to decorating for Christmas, the first step is getting the decorations.  Unfortunately, in today’s world, many families are finding it difficult to afford “extras,” including Christmas decorations. However, there is good news.  If you are on a budget, there are still a number of different ways that you can get your home decorated for Christmas. You can do so with low-cost Christmas decorations.
When it comes to low-cost Christmas decorations, it is important to remember that different people associate low-cost with different things.  Just because you think a particular Christmas decoration is low-cost doesn’t necessarily mean that someone else will. For some individuals, a low-cost Christmas decoration is an item that only costs one dollar, for others it is five, and for others it can be fifty dollars.  That is why it is important, when looking for low-cost Christmas decorations, that you keep this in mind.  However, no matter what your view of low-cost is, there are still a number of different ways that you can go about decorating for Christmas.

Perhaps, the easiest way to save money while decorating for Christmas is to not buy any Christmas decorations.  If you decorated your home for Christmas last year or in recent years, did you save your old Christmas decorations?  If you did save your old Christmas decorations, you may want to think about using them again this year. Although it may be nice to have brand new Christmas decorations, they are not required.  Not only can you save money by using your old Christmas decorations, but you might not have to spend any extra money at all!
In addition to using your own used Christmas decorations, you may want to think about using other people’s old Christmas decorations. During the summer and sometimes during the early fall, you may be able find local yard sales.  Yard sales are a great place to get used Christmas decorations for an affordable price.  If you are unable to find a yard sale, you can also purchase used Christmas decorations online. You can easily find a collection of used and sometimes even deeply discounted new Christmas decorations by doing your shopping on an online auction website.

Although you can save a fairly large amount of money by buying used Christmas decorations, as previously mentioned, there is a good chance that you want new ones.  If this is the case, you still have a number of different options.  You should check your local dollar stores, discount stores, and even department stores. Many of these stores, around Christmastime, have a large selection of Christmas decorations, at an affordable price. If you are looking to save the most money, it may be a good idea to visit your local dollar stores. Some dollar stores sell really nice Christmas decorations for a dollar and sometimes even less.
It might even be possible for you to make your own Christmas decorations, with items that you already have inside your house. In fact, this is how you can turn your old Christmas decorations into new ones.  Simply by altering your existing decorations in one way or another, for instance by adding a bow, you could make your old Christmas decorations like new.  You can also take a simple candleholder and turn it into a Christmas candleholder with a little bit of creativity.  The same can be said for a number of other items that you likely already have inside your home.  This is another way that you could avoid spending any money on Christmas decorations.

As you can easily see, there are a number of different ways that you can go about finding or making your own low-cost Christmas directions. Although you may be worried about the quality of those decorations, you shouldn’t be.  Most times, it isn’t necessarily about the Christmas decorations themselves, but they way that they are presented or arranged.

Christmas Lights: The Ultimate Way to Decorate Your Home

Friday, November 18, 2011

Christmas lights; we have all seen them and most of us have used them before. When it comes to Christmas lights, we often associate those lights with Christmas trees.  While Christmas lights are most commonly used to decorate Christmas trees, did you know that they can also be used for much more?  If you are planning on decorating your home for Christmas this year, you are advised to examine what else Christmas lights can be used for. After a close examination, you will likely see that they can be used for a lot more than you may have originally thought.
As previously mentioned, when it comes to Christmas lights, we often associate Christmas lights with Christmas trees. This is because a large number of individuals decorate their Christmas trees with Christmas lights.  What is nice about using Christmas lights on a Christmas tree is that the lights come in a number of different sizes and styles.  It is possible to purchase Christmas lights with small light bulbs, as well as large ones.  Traditional Christmas lights come white in color or with a combination of all different colors.  In recent years, the popularity of different colored lights has skyrocketed.  You can now purchase single colored Christmas lights or lights with a specific color combination. These types of lights are ideal for those who are looking to theme their Christmas tree.
Although many individuals choose to use Christmas lights for their Christmas tree, as stated above, there are other uses for them as well.  One of those uses is for decorating the outside of your home.  Online and in many retail stores across America, you can easily find Christmas lights that are designed for outside use, particular around a home. These type of lights are often referred to as icicle Christmas lights.  Icicle Christmas lights allow the lights to hang off the side of a house.  While it is possible to find multicolored outdoor Christmas lights, you will find that they are most commonly sold in the traditional white color.
In addition to decorating the outside of the outside of your home with Christmas lights, you can also decorate the trees outside of your home.  A number of homeowners, each year, decorate the trees outside their home, often exactly like their indoor Christmas trees.  Many times, these trees are relatively small in size; therefore, the same types of Christmas lights that can be used on a regular tree can also, sometimes, be used on an outdoor tree.  Decorating the small trees in your yard is a great way to bring a touch of Christmas to your neighborhood.

You can also use Christmas lights to decorate any one of the rooms that can be found inside your home.  There are many individuals who hang Christmas lights along the top of their walls. This is a great way to bring extra Christmas spirit into the room that your Christmas tree is in, as well as other rooms. In fact, you can even use Christmas lights to decorate one of your home’s bedrooms.  This idea is often loved by teenagers and other children; many enjoy the bright lights and colors. Decorating your home’s bedrooms is a great way to bring the Christmas spirit into a room that you may have otherwise not decorated.
As nice as it is to decorate your home for Christmas, you may also want to decorate your office or your workspace. Unfortunately, not everyone celebrates Christmas.  This may pose a problem, when it comes to decorating your office workspace.  However, you can still, in many cases, use Christmas lights to decorate your office.  In most cases, you will find that it is the decorations that scream Christmas that cause the problems, not the lights themselves. Therefore, if you supervisors approve, you could easily hang Christmas lights around your office walls or along the sides of your work desk.
Isn’t it amazing all of the different ways that you can use Christmas lights to decorate your home or even your office? What is even more amazing is the above mentioned examples are just a few of the many ways that you can use Christmas lights to bring the holiday spirit into your home or office.

Shopping for Christmas Tree Decorations

Thursday, November 17, 2011

When it comes to decorating for Christmas, there are a large number of individuals and families who put a lot of time and focus into decorating, especially their Christmas tree.  If you are looking to decorate your Christmas tree this year, either by yourself or with your family, you will need to have Christmas tree decorations. While there is a good chance that you already have some Christmas tree decorations saved, you may need or want to purchase more. If that is the case, you will have a number of different buying options.
Perhaps, one of the easiest ways to purchase decorations for your Christmas tree is by visiting one of your local department stores. Department stores are nice because they sometimes double as discount stores; meaning you should be able to purchase your Christmas tree decorations, whether they be lights or ornaments, for a relatively affordable price.  Also, depending on the size of your local department store, you should be able to find a fairly large selection of Christmas tree decorations.
In addition to your local department store, you can also find and buy Christmas tree decorations from specialty Christmas shops.  Depending on where you live, you should have at least one specialty Christmas shop in or around your home.  What is nice about specialty Christmas shops is that they specifically focus on Christmas.  Essentially, that means that if you are looking for the largest selection of Christmas tree decorations, you may want to think about doing your shopping at a specialty Christmas shop. The only problem with specialty Christmas shops is that their items tend to be higher priced; however, the quality is often better than what you would find in most department stores.
If you are looking for high quality, elegant Christmas tree decorations or ornaments, but you do not have access to a local specialty Christmas store, you may want to think about doing your shopping online. Online, there are a number of retailers who specialize in selling Christmas tree decorations. In addition to the Christmas tree decorations that you may find in your local department store, you may also be able to find individuals or companies who specialize in creating unique, handcrafted Christmas ornaments.  As you might expect, handcrafted Christmas ornaments, especially those that are customized, cost a fairly decent amount of money, but it would be more than worth the extra cost to get exactly what you wanted.

As previously mentioned, there is a good chance that you already have a collection of Christmas tree decorations saved from previous years.  If you are looking to save money, when decorating your Christmas tree, it may be best to use all of your old decorations.  You could easily change things around a little bit so that your tree doesn’t look exactly the same as it did in previous years.  If you did not save your Christmas tree decorations from last year, you will need to purchase new ones. After you have purchased new decorations for your tree and the Christmas holiday has come and gone, you may want to save your new decorations for the following year.  Doing so may make it easier for you to decorate next year’s Christmas tree.
Whether you are shopping for Christmas tree decorations on a budget or not, you should easily be able to find the decorations that you wanted or at least the ones that you need.  While it is fun to shop for Christmas tree decorations, the fun part starts when the tree decorating process actually begins.  For the best memories, decorate your Christmas tree with someone that you know and love.

Christmas Shopping for Kids

Wednesday, November 16, 2011

Christmas is a truly magical season that is enjoyed by many but no one enjoys the Christmas season more than kids. It might be the prospect of some well deserved time off from school, the allure of the lights and decorations, the beauty of the snow that often accompanies Christmas or just the anticipation of Santa and his sleigh filled with toys that is so exciting for children but it is evident that most kids are truly enchanted by Christmas. For this reason many adults truly enjoy shopping for kids and Christmas time.
While Christmas shopping for kids is a great deal of fun there are some factors to consider when Christmas shopping for kids. A few of the specific concerns include selecting age appropriate toys, selecting toys which are not too noisy or too big for the child’s living situation, selecting toys the child does not already have, selecting toys which the parents consider to be acceptable and finally selecting toys the child will enjoy. This can make Christmas shopping for kids a little more difficult but does not make the shopping any less fun.

Selecting age appropriate toys is very important when Christmas shopping for kids. This is so important for a couple of reasons. First of all it is important because toys which are designed for older children might be potentially dangerous for the child. For example toys which are designed for children over the age of three may contain small pieces which pose a choking hazard. Children under the age of three still often put toys and other objects in their mouths so they must receive toys which contain only pieces large enough to not be a choking hazard. Also, toys which are designed for an older child or even a younger child may not be as much fun for the child as they would be for children of the appropriate age. If the child is too young for the toy, they may be come easily frustrated because they can not use the toy appropriately. Conversely a child who is too old for a particular toy may become bored with the toy quickly.
When shopping for Christmas gifts for a child, it is also important to consider the child’s parents and the living situation. This includes the size of the living area and the proximity to neighbors. Specifically toys which are particularly noisy may not be appropriate for a child who lives in an apartment building with other apartment units nearby. Also, large toys such as a trampoline may not be appropriate for a child who does not have a yard large enough to accommodate such a gift. Similarly large indoor items such as a foosball table would not be appropriate for a child who does not have a dedicated toy room to accommodate such a large item. As a general rule it is best to stick with small items which do not make a great deal of noise when Christmas shopping for kids.
It is also important to consider the personal beliefs of the parents when shopping for Christmas gifts for their children. Specifically you should not purchase an item for a child if you know their parents are ethically opposed to such as item. Guns and violent video games are a couple of obvious example of Christmas gifts which may offend the parents. There are many parents who do not allow their children to play with these items because they believe they promote violence. If you are not sure about the feelings of the parents, it is best not to select these items.
Finally, when Christmas shopping for a child, it is wise to consult the parents beforehand. This can be helpful for a couple of different reasons. First the parents can give some insight into the child’s hobbies and interests which may make selecting a gift easier. They may even suggest a specific item from the child’s Christmas list ensuring you are giving the child something he really wants for Christmas. Consulting the parents can also prevent you from giving the child a gift he already has. Try calling the parents before you make a purchase to suggest a particular item. They can let you know if they think the child will enjoy the item or if the child already has the item.

Decorating Your Home for Christmas: Let the Kids do it!

Are you a parent?  If so, are you children looking forward to Christmas this year?  Whether your children are toddlers or teenagers, there is a good chance that they are excited with what Christmas may bring.  In the weeks and days leading up to Christmas, you will find that their excitement just keeps on building.  To hang on to that excitement, you may want to think about decorating your home for Christmas.  Decorating your home for Christmas is a great way to keep your children’s excitement going strong until Christmas does finally arrive.
When it comes to decorating for Christmas, you will find that you have a number of different options.  Your first impulse may be to decorate your home on your own, but you may want to think about letting your children help you.  You will find that there are, literally, an unlimited number of benefits to letting your children help you decorate for Christmas, no matter how young or old they are.

As previously mentioned, there are a number of benefits to letting your children help you decorate your home for Christmas, no matter what their age.  Despite the fact that children of all ages could benefit from helping you decorate for Christmas, there are some children who could benefit more than others.  For instance, young children, especially toddlers, are in the learning stages of their life.  This stage is where children can benefit the most from a small amount of responsibility and encouragement.  Encouraging your children to help you decorate for Christmas, by hanging up pictures or by completing another small task, you could be encouraging them to use their mind, their imagination, and their decorating skills!
Perhaps, the best way to go about decorating your home for Christmas is together.  Unfortunately, in today’s world families don’t get to spend as much time with each other as they should. That is one of the reasons why Christmas is so important; it is one of the times when all families get to come together.  Instead of decorating for Christmas by yourself or letting your children do it all, you all should decorate for Christmas.  In addition to helping build up the Christmas spirit, decorating for Christmas as a family is one of the best ways to spending well needed bonding time together.

The best part of decorating, for your kids, may be the actual decorating process, but there is something else that your kids may also enjoy.  They may also enjoy helping you pick out Christmas decorations. By taking your kids with you to the store, they could easily help you pick out Christmas decorations. If you are shopping for Christmas decorations on a budget, you are advised to visit your local dollar store or department store. These stores usually have low-cost Christmas decorations, many of which will appeal to children. If, by some chance, you can’t find the decorations that you or your children were looking for, you could easily make their own Christmas decorations.  In fact, making homemade Christmas decorations is another fun experience, all on its own.
Regardless of whether or not you ask your children for assistance, when decorating your home for Christmas, you are urged to decorate.  For children, Christmas decorations help to keep them excited about the upcoming holiday.  That is why Christmas decorations are an important part of the holiday season.

Christmas Shopping for Your Boss

Monday, November 14, 2011

Christmas shopping for your boss can be a difficult situation. First of all purchasing a Christmas gift for your superiors at work is considered to be somewhat of a issue unless the gift is being purchased by a group of employees. While giving Christmas gifts to subordinates is generally an accepted practice, gifts from individuals to a boss can be viewed as an attempt to gain advantages such as promotions or favorable projects or treatments. As a result care should always be taken when giving Christmas gifts to a boss. This article will take a look at situations in which giving a Christmas gift to your boss is acceptable and will offer tips for Christmas shopping for your boss.
While an individual giving a Christmas gift to the boss is not an accepted practice it is acceptable for a group of employees to purchase a joint gift for their boss. As an example, a boss who oversees the work of a small group of employees may receive a gift from this small group collectively and this would be considered appropriate. In this way the gift is viewed as a gesture of appreciate from the members of the group and not an attempt by one of the members to gain favorable treatment. However, even in this acceptable situation, Christmas shopping for your boss could be quite difficult.

The first area of concern when Christmas shopping for your boss is setting a budget. If you are shopping for a gift from a large group of people, it is a good idea to collect the money first and then use the amount collected to set the budget for the gift. You may ask for a small amount of money, typically around $5-$10 from each person and once the money is collected you can search for items which fall within your budget. You should not exceed the amount of money you collected because it is not considered acceptable to ask for additional money if you had promised to stay within budget. Most people have a great deal of shopping to do and being asked to contribute additional money can be somewhat of a hardship for them. However, it is considered acceptable to spend a little less than the budget as long as you refund the remaining money equally to everyone who has contributed. For example if you spend $20 less than you collected from 20 people, you should return $1 to each person who contributed. If you are the person shopping for the Christmas present you may have to exercise some common sense and make judgment calls if necessary. For example if you collect $120 and purchase an item which costs $121.04, including tax, you may opt to simply pay the additional amount yourself if you are able to do so. The additional amount is quite small and if the gift is appropriate, it might be worthwhile to incur this small expense for the sake of purchasing a perfect gift which is within your budget.
Christmas shopping for a boss can also be rather difficult because you may not know what to buy for your boss. If you are not particularly close to your boss and do not often socialize with him you may not know a great deal about his interests. In this case it might be a good idea to either ask someone who knows him better to do the Christmas shopping or at least ask them to provide you with a few gift ideas. Other employees may know the boss better because they have worked with him longer or because they participate in activities such as company softball games with him. In either case, they can probably provide you with some insight into his interests which would help you select a gift he will appreciate. If you are unable to come up with a suitable gift idea, a gift certificate to a local restaurant is always an appropriate, and appreciated, Christmas gift.

Traditional Christmas Cooking

Christmas is a time of year when different families around the world will get together and observe traditions that are the same for them year after year and yet vastly different from those that other families share around the block. There are very few universal Christmas traditions any more and there is nothing wrong with that. In America however, there are some items that many people consider traditional holiday cooking and there is little that will be done to dissuade these opinions. The truth is that many of these traditional holiday foods are largely traditional in specific regions rather than the United States having one nationwide traditional Christmas dinner.
Turkey or ham? For some families the answer is both while others answer quite quickly that it is neither. One of the best all-American Christmas cooking ideas I've ever seen was lasagna. It was a Christmas Eve tradition but a delicious tradition just the same. There are no right or wrong traditions only those traditions that work well for you and your family. If you feel the need to change a long-standing tradition for a large extended family by all means discuss it with everyone involved. Otherwise it is your tradition and you should feel free to make it your own.

At the same time, there is something comforting and reminiscent of home to have those traditions to come home to year after year. I can't help but think of the movie Christmas with the Kranks. The entire movie was spent in an attempt to break with the traditional Christmas trappings and trimmings only to make a mad dash to return to them in the end. That is often the way things go when attempting to break with tradition. If you are considering this for the first time this Christmas be sure to hang on to some of your old traditions in case you find that it just doesn't feel like Christmas without them. You certainly don't want it to be too late and miss out on the spirit of Christmas in your home.
Other great traditional favorites for many Americans as far as Christmas cooking goes are: sweet potato casseroles, devilled eggs, dressing or stuffing, mashed potatoes, green bean casserole, pumpkin pie, apple pie, mince meat pie, and pecan pie. Of course there are regional favorites that are often highly dependent upon where you live such as key lime pie, lemon icebox pie, oyster dressing, deep fried turkey. If one of these is a Christmas tradition for you, no matter where you are in the world you will think of home or Christmas whenever you come across them. It's really amazing how that happens and quite nice too when family and friends seem far away to have something as simple as a dish of food make them seem that much closer.

That, of course, is the great, and almost perfect thing about Christmas traditions. We pass them along to our children who one day will find that they are a little less alone because someone in an airport is eating a slice of key lime pie or having a dish of macaroni and cheese. If you don't have Christmas traditions it is time to develop a few just so that you can share something special and almost sacred with your friends and family.
